Dog Boarding near Portage, IN

Trusted Dog Boarding and Pet Resort near Portage, IN

Supervision is the baseline, not the point. For more than 25 years Bittersweet Pet Resorts has been building overnight stays that dogs actually settle into, on care standards a veterinarian would put their name to, run by people who have done this long enough to read a dog’s mood from across the room.

Portage families check in at our Northwest Indiana resort, 19 West U.S. Highway 6 in Valparaiso — the closest resort-quality boarding to Porter County’s north side. Your dog gets a private suite, a team that learns their name the first afternoon, and genuine daily time in our indoor and outdoor areas to run, wrestle, and socialize with dogs who match their speed. Some guests want a packed schedule; others want quiet and a soft place to land. We build the stay around whichever one yours happens to be. Anyone searching for dog boarding near Portage, IN is welcome to stop in and look around before booking a thing.

What Every Portage Boarding Stay Includes

Book a stay with Bittersweet Pet Resorts and here’s what comes standard for Portage dogs:

  • Cameras and live monitoring that never switch off — overnight, weekends, holidays, all of it.
  • Indoor temperatures held steady year-round, whether it’s a lake-effect January or an August heat index.
  • Cleaning protocols written to satisfy a veterinarian’s inspection, not a quick pass with a mop.
  • Continuous air exchange throughout the building, so indoor spaces stay fresh instead of closed-in.
  • Multiple daily wellness checks, each one done by a trained staff member who knows what to look for.
  • A care plan shaped by your individual dog — their quirks, their routine, their temperament — instead of a house standard applied to everyone.
  • Four outdoor potty breaks a day as the floor, with more available for dogs who need them.
  • Small comforts that stack up: elevated feeders, soft bedding, and the kind of details that separate a resort from a kennel.
  • Lighting and furnishings chosen to feel like a home, not a veterinary waiting room.

Keeping Portage Dogs Busy & Rested

Happy dog laying in grass with yellow flowers at Bittersweet Pet Resorts near Portage, IN

Maybe your dog just spent the morning on the Iron Horse Heritage Trail, or maybe you simply need dependable boarding while you’re out of town. Either way, enrichment is built into the stay rather than sold as an afterthought:

  • Group Play – Dogs who light up around other dogs join supervised sessions in a secure, closely watched yard, where making a few new friends is most of the appeal.
  • Private Play – Crowds aren’t for everyone. This pairs your dog with one staff member for solo walks, games, and as much affection as they’ll tolerate — nobody else invited.
  • Puppy Package – Our youngest guests get additional play sessions plus extra trips outside, which keeps housetraining on track and good habits forming early.
  • Old Soul Package – Senior dogs set their own tempo, with orthopedic bedding, gentler activity, and staff tracking medication times so a dose never slips through the cracks.
  • Bedtime Pampering – The day closes with an unhurried tuck-in, meant to bring your dog down from the excitement and into a calm night’s sleep.

How We Protect Every Dog in Our Care

The standard doesn’t shift based on where a guest drove in from — Portage, Chesterton, Crown Point, anywhere in Northwest Indiana. Safety and health decisions shape how the whole building runs:

  • New guests go through a temperament evaluation before they ever join a group, so every pairing starts on solid footing.
  • No corner of the facility runs without a staff member watching it — supervision is constant, not periodic.
  • Real one-on-one attention comes from a seasoned team, not a rushed check-in squeezed between other jobs.
  • Vaccination requirements apply to every dog before arrival, without exceptions made.
  • Climate control and security systems operate together, 24 hours a day, keeping the building both safe and comfortable.
  • Air circulation technology keeps indoor spaces smelling clean and feeling open rather than stuffy.
  • A detailed cleaning routine resets every space so it’s genuinely ready for whoever checks in next.

Start to finish, the aim is a stay that’s safe, comfortable, and worth your dog’s time — for Portage guests and every community our Northwest Indiana resort serves.

Dog Boarding FAQ

Spotted puppy standing on pink slide at Bittersweet Pet Resorts near Portage, IN

What vaccines does my dog need to stay?

For the safety of all our guests, we require dogs be up to date on their vaccinations for rabies, DHLPP (distemper), and Bordetella.

Starting July 1st, all dogs will be required to have the leptospirosis (lepto) vaccine in addition to distemper/parvo, rabies, and bordetella. Many veterinarians include lepto within the distemper/parvo combination (often listed as DHLPP), though it may also be administered separately (DHPP).

When can I drop off and pick up my pet?

Check-in can be any time during our operating hours. We recommend dropping off a bit before closing so your pet has time to settle in. You can also check-out any time during business hours, but if you pick up before 12 noon Monday-Saturday you won’t be charged the nightly rate. On Sundays, the day charge always applies.

Our operating hours are:

  • Monday-Friday 7:30 am-7:00 pm

Dog Daycare near Portage, IN

Long workdays, a packed errand list, a commute into Chicago — whatever’s keeping you out of the house, Bittersweet’s daycare beats leaving your dog home alone with the TV on. Portage dogs come here for actual play, actual socializing, and eyes on them the whole time.

  • Turf and natural grass yards give dogs room to sprint flat out, dig into enrichment puzzles, and burn off what they came in with.
  • Fencing encloses every outdoor yard completely, and staff stay close enough to redirect trouble before it turns into anything.
  • Hot afternoons mean splash pools and shade; cold ones mean climate-controlled lounges, and both are available whenever a dog needs the break.
  • Playgroups get built deliberately around size, play style, and energy level rather than whoever happens to be here that day.
  • Gentler options exist too — smaller, calmer sessions for seniors and for dogs who’d rather skip the scrum entirely.
  • A new theme lands on the calendar most months, so regulars aren’t running the same routine week after week.

Give us a call to get your Portage pup on the daycare schedule.

Dog Training near Portage, IN

Portage owners who want a dog that’s easy to live with — and a clearer line of communication with them — can work with Bittersweet’s professional trainers.

    • Lodge-n-Learn Training Program – Training rides along with the boarding stay. Your dog works daily one-on-one with an experienced trainer toward defined obedience and behavior goals, and you leave with the instructions and tools to hold the progress at home.
    • Play & Train Evaluation Program – Our team figures out how your dog actually learns first — temperament, pace, what motivates them — then designs around that, using positive reinforcement to firm up commands and grow confidence.

Consistent training takes pressure off the dog and the owner both, and results hold up best when Portage families keep practicing at home between sessions.

Why Portage, IN Pet Parents Choose Bittersweet Pet Resorts

Few Indiana cities make it this easy to have a dog. The Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk puts a paved path and a pier out onto Lake Michigan inside Indiana Dunes National Park, where leashed dogs are welcome and the shelf ice in February is worth the cold walk. Imagination Glen Park over on McCool Road opens up into wide fields for fetch and doubles as a trailhead. From there the Iron Horse Heritage Trail runs east to west straight across the city, out toward Portage Avenue on one end and tying into the Prairie Duneland Trail on the other — which means a Portage dog can put in a couple of trail miles without anyone getting in a car. Note that the national park caps leashes at six feet, so the retractable stays home for lakefront days.

A dog getting that much activity needs somewhere equally engaged when the family leaves town, and that’s the gap Bittersweet Pet Resorts fills for Portage pet parents. Our Northwest Indiana resort sits on US-6 in Valparaiso, close enough for a same-morning drop-off before a flight out of Midway or a stretch of work travel. Dogs get private accommodations, playgroups sorted by temperament, round-the-clock monitoring, and add-ons like the Puppy Package or the Old Soul Package when a young dog or an older one needs something specific. You get to leave without the low-grade worry riding along.

How to Get Here from Portage, IN

Portage pet owners have two Bittersweet resorts to choose from, though one is considerably closer than the other. Most local families use our Northwest Indiana location; the Niles, MI resort is worth knowing about if your travel plans already have you heading east.

To our Northwest Indiana resort (Valparaiso): Start on County Road 400 W/McCool Road — the same road that runs past Imagination Glen — and follow it south to US-6, about 6 minutes and 3.4 miles. Merge east onto US-6/W U.S. Hwy 6 and stay with it another 7 minutes (4.2 miles) into Liberty Township. Turn right off the highway and Bittersweet Pet Resorts – Northwest Indiana Area is 249 feet ahead on your left, at 19 W U.S. Hwy 6, Valparaiso, IN 46385. Door to door, plan on roughly 14 minutes and 7.6 miles.

To our Niles, MI resort: From Portage, get on I-80 E/I-90 E — about 4 minutes and 1.8 miles. Stay on the interstate heading east across northern Indiana and into Bertrand Township, Michigan, taking exit 3 from US-31 N. That stretch runs approximately 50 minutes and 54.3 miles. From the exit, continue on US-12 E for a final 3 minutes (2.4 miles) to reach Bittersweet Pet Resorts at 2100 Weaver Rd, Niles, MI 49120. Total drive time is about 57 minutes covering 58.5 miles.

Both resorts operate to the same standard, but for Portage families the Valparaiso trip is the practical one — under fifteen minutes, no Toll Road, and short enough to handle on the way to something else.
