Trusted Overnight Dog Boarding near Schoolcraft, MI
Schoolcraft sits close enough to Bittersweet’s Kalamazoo Area resort that dropping your dog off barely counts as a detour. Follow US-131 south out of the village and you’re at our door in Three Rivers in about the time it takes to finish a podcast episode. That convenience is backed by more than 25 years of pet care, veterinarian-informed protocols, and a team that has spent years reading dog body language for a living.
Once your dog is checked in, the stay is built around them rather than around a schedule. Guests sleep in private suites, get individual attention from handlers who learn their name on day one, and spend real stretches of the day outside and in motion across our indoor and outdoor play areas. Some dogs want a full social calendar; others want quiet, a soft bed, and a person who will sit with them. We plan for both. Schoolcraft families looking into dog boarding are welcome to call and see the place for themselves.
The Standards Behind Every Schoolcraft-Area Boarding Stay
Here’s what Schoolcraft dog owners can count on when they board with Bittersweet:
- Cameras and staff oversight cover the building continuously — there’s no window in the day when guests go unwatched.
- Southwest Michigan swings from humid Augusts to sub-zero Januarys; inside, the temperature holds steady either way.
- Cleaning protocols were built with veterinary input, which means surfaces and equipment get disinfected on a set schedule, not wiped down when someone gets a free minute.
- Fresh air moves through the building continuously, so indoor spaces never develop the closed-up smell people associate with older kennels.
- Experienced handlers lay eyes on every dog several times a day, checking appetite, energy, and general condition.
- Your dog’s routine drives ours — feeding times, quirks, comfort objects, and pace all carry over from home instead of getting flattened into one standard schedule.
- Four outdoor bathroom breaks is the floor of the daily schedule, not the target; dogs who need more get more.
- Elevated food and water stations, soft supportive bedding, and similar details keep the space from feeling institutional.
- Warm lighting and residential-style furnishings do a lot to settle dogs who tense up in clinical environments.

Daily Enrichment Built Into Your Schoolcraft Dog’s Stay
Maybe your dog just spent the morning tearing around Prairie View County Park, or maybe you simply need dependable boarding while you’re out of town. Either way, the stay comes with real activity built in:
- Group Play – Sociable dogs join supervised sessions in a fenced, closely watched play space, where they can chase, wrestle, and make a few new friends.
- Private Play – Crowds aren’t for everyone. This option books a staff member for solo walks, one-on-one games, and uninterrupted attention, with no other dogs in the mix.
- Puppy Package – Younger guests get additional play blocks plus more frequent trips outside, which keeps housetraining moving and reinforces the habits you’re building at home.
- Old Soul Package – Senior dogs set their own pace here, with orthopedic bedding, gentler activity, and staff tracking medication times so no dose slips.
- Bedtime Pampering – Evenings close with an unhurried tuck-in routine that helps dogs wind down and settle before lights out.
How We Protect the Health and Comfort of Every Guest
Dogs arriving from Schoolcraft or anywhere else in our service area are all held to one standard. Safety and health aren’t a department here — they shape how the whole building runs:
- Temperament evaluations happen before any dog enters a group setting, so playgroup matches get made on evidence rather than assumption.
- No corner of the facility operates without a staff member present; supervision is constant, not periodic.
- Attention comes from handlers who genuinely know dogs, not from someone squeezing in a glance between other tasks.
- Vaccination records get verified ahead of check-in, and we don’t make exceptions to that.
- Climate systems and security equipment run together, nonstop, holding the building at a safe and comfortable baseline.
- Air circulation technology keeps indoor spaces breathable and clean-smelling instead of letting them go stagnant.
- Deep-cleaning routines fully reset every space between guests.
From drop-off through pickup, the aim stays the same: a stay that’s safe, comfortable, and genuinely worth your dog’s time — for Schoolcraft guests and every community we serve.

Dog Boarding FAQ
What vaccines does my dog need to stay?
For the safety of all our guests, we require dogs be up to date on their vaccinations for rabies, DHLPP (distemper), and Bordetella.
Starting July 1st, all dogs will be required to have the leptospirosis (lepto) vaccine in addition to distemper/parvo, rabies, and bordetella. Many veterinarians include lepto within the distemper/parvo combination (often listed as DHLPP), though it may also be administered separately (DHPP).
When can I drop off and pick up my pet?
Check-in can be any time during our operating hours. We recommend dropping off a bit before closing so your pet has time to settle in. You can also check-out any time during business hours, but if you pick up before 12 noon Monday-Saturday you won’t be charged the nightly rate. On Sundays, the day charge always applies.
Our operating hours are:
- Monday-Friday 7:30 am-7:00 pm

Other Services We Offer:
Dog Daycare near Schoolcraft, MI
A workday your dog spends alone at home is a workday nobody enjoys. Bittersweet’s daycare gives Schoolcraft dogs somewhere to burn energy, be around other dogs, and stay under watchful eyes while you handle the rest of your schedule.
- Play yards mix grass and turf, giving dogs room to sprint flat-out, work through enrichment toys, and wear themselves out properly.
- Tall, secure fencing rings every yard, and staff stay near enough to step in before a disagreement turns into anything.
- Summer heat means splash pools and shade; when dogs need a reset, climate-controlled indoor lounges are open for cooling off or warming up.
- Playgroups get assembled deliberately around size, temperament, and energy — no dog gets thrown into a mismatched group.
- Dogs who’d rather avoid the commotion have options too, including smaller sessions built for seniors or quieter personalities.
- Fresh themed activities land on the calendar most months, so daycare doesn’t settle into the same day on repeat.
Dog Training near Schoolcraft, MI
Schoolcraft owners who want a dog that’s easy to live with — and a closer relationship with that dog — can work with Bittersweet’s professional trainers.
- Lodge-n-Learn Training Program – Training runs alongside a boarding stay, with daily one-on-one sessions aimed at specific obedience and behavior goals. Your dog goes home with progress made, and you go home with the tools and instructions to keep building on it.
- Play & Train Evaluation Program – Before training begins, our team studies how your dog actually learns — temperament, pace, what motivates them — and shapes the program around that, relying on positive reinforcement to sharpen commands and grow confidence.
Steady training takes pressure off dogs and owners alike, and we ask Schoolcraft families to keep reinforcing the work at home so the results hold.

Why Schoolcraft Pet Parents Choose Bittersweet Pet Resorts
Life in Schoolcraft moves at a pace dogs appreciate. The village sits on the edge of Prairie Ronde’s open farmland, where sandhill cranes drop into the seed corn fields and a walk along a country road is a legitimate evening plan. Pet owners here log miles on the paved and gravel loops at Swan Park, let their dogs stretch out in the open fields and wooded trails at Prairie View County Park, and run errands along Grand Street, where downtown’s antique shops and restaurants are the kind of place a leashed dog waiting outside is nobody’s problem. When someone wants off-leash time, the fenced dog park on South Westnedge up in Portage is a short drive north.
That everyday, outdoors-together rhythm sets a high bar for whoever looks after your dog while you’re gone. Bittersweet Pet Resorts aims to meet it. Our Kalamazoo Area resort is close enough to Schoolcraft that a drop-off fits into a normal morning, and the care waiting on the other end — private suites, real play time, staff who pay attention — is built so you can leave for a work trip, a long weekend, or a stretch of busy days without second-guessing the decision.
How to Get Here from Schoolcraft
Schoolcraft sits right on US-131, which makes getting to Bittersweet about as uncomplicated as directions get. Most families in the village head to our Kalamazoo Area resort in Three Rivers, though our Niles location is an option if your travel plans already have you heading that direction.
Heading to the Kalamazoo Area resort in Three Rivers: Starting in Schoolcraft, make your way toward S Grand St and turn right onto US-131 S/S Grand St. From there it’s one road the whole way — stay on US-131 S for about 6.1 miles as the farmland opens up on either side. Call it just under 7 miles door to door.
Heading to the Niles resort: From Schoolcraft, start toward S Grand St, then follow US-131 S and pick up M-60 W, staying on it into Bertrand Township until you reach Weaver Rd — that leg runs about 57 minutes and 49.5 miles. Turn onto Weaver Rd and continue another 2 minutes (0.8 miles) to Bittersweet Pet Resorts at 2100 Weaver Rd, Niles, MI 49120. Total trip is right around an hour covering roughly 50 miles.
Both resorts run on the same care standards and the same staff training, so Schoolcraft families are welcome at either — though the Three Rivers location is the natural fit for most.
